Frequently Asked Questions about Mesh Wi-Fi

What is a Mesh Wi-Fi system?

A Mesh Wi-Fi system consists of multiple interconnected devices (nodes) that provide seamless Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home, eliminating dead zones and improving connectivity. If you experience weak signals or dead zones in certain areas of your home, especially in larger spaces or multi-story buildings, a mesh system can help extend and improve your Wi-Fi coverage.

How do I choose the right Deco model for my network?

To select the best Deco model, consider the following:

  • Internet Connection: The type of internet connection you have significantly affects availability, speed, and performance. Fixed connections, like fiber-optic, coaxial cable, and DSL, are directly wired to your home. On the other hand, satellite internet, fixed wireless, and the increasingly popular 5G home internet provide wireless options to consider. For details, see https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/3735/
  • Networking Method: All of our Deco products support wired and wireless backhaul (except Deco M3W). Under certain circumstances, the house is separated by thick concrete walls, or the modem is located at the far end of the house, which makes it hard to connect satellite Mesh nodes wirelessly to the main unit. Drilling holes in the wall for dragging a long Ethernet cable is not the optimal choice. In this way, transmitting signals via powerline would be an excellent option.
  • Outdoor Installation: We now offer Deco models that support POE and outdoor mounting options. Models like Deco X50-POE can be mounted outdoors and support Power over Ethernet (POE).
Can different Deco models work together?

All Deco models can be mixed to create a mesh network. You can either create a new Deco network or add a new Deco to an existing one using the Deco app.

How to use Deco With Your Existing Router?

To extend your network, you can connect Deco to your existing router. Deco supports two modes: Router Mode and Access Point Mode.
In Router Mode, it’s suggested to only connect the main Deco to the existing router via Ethernet, a network loop may occur.
In Access Point Mode, you can connect multiple Deco units to the router via Ethernet.
